Taipei, April 28, 2025. On April 8, 2025, APMIC and Twinkle AI jointly launched Taiwan's first 3B Traditional Chinese Language Model: Formosa-1, which can run on mobile devices. This marks a major milestone for on-device AI. Following the success, APMIC has recently launched a self-developed Model Context Protocol (MCP), which extends Formosa-1's capabilities to connect with both internal and external enterprise systems. This innovation provides a way for us to interact with machines using natural language in an intuitive and cost-efficient way. Businesses can run Formosa-1 effectively even with hardware limitations such as mid-range GPUs or embedded platforms as it now offers real-time semantic understanding and responsive interactions.

Small but Mighty

While many AI models exceed tens of billions of parameters, a 3B‑parameter scale already offers significant deployment flexibility and inference speed. Through advanced distillation and specialized training techniques—collectively known as APMIC’s S1 service—the 3B model is small but mighty, delivering enterprise‑grade AI solutions for query, control, and decision‑support tasks directly in the field.

Natural Language: From Communication to Prompt

Unlike conversation AI which simply responds to questions, Formosa-1 with MCP transforms spoken and written language into actionable prompts.

For example, a user can speak to the model that, "I want to know about Charmander." Formosa-1 will connect to the PokéAPI through MCP and answer the user with Charmander information. In the industrial automation industry, engineers can ask the model to check for CNC error codes or Turn on the module 2 fan, triggering real-time diagnostics and control. Another example is that retailers can use their voice to operate the POS, querying "Today's sales" or "Which item needs restocking most?" The system will respond instantly. Another example of logistics control is that when users say "Send this order to the driver", it will become a one-step voice prompt.

Through MCP, the 3B model can seamlessly invoke any external API, such as ERP systems, weather services, exchange-rate feeds, machine-monitoring dashboards, and more— replacing cumbersome UIs or manual processes with a single natural‑language prompt. This dramatically boosts efficiency and user-friendliness.

Mobile-Ready AI: 3B Scale Enables Hassle-Free Enterprise Deployment

Formosa-1, a small model, can run smoothly on mobile phones and other edge devices, eliminating the need for constant cloud connectivity or high-end GPUs. Enterprises can deploy AI assistants across mobile devices, IoT environments, and even remote sites—vastly expanding where and how language models can be used.

Although it's not tuned for deep logical inference, Formosa‑1 excels at structured tasks, workflow automation, and multimodal data calls.
